Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States. It was established to provide health coverage for people aged 65 and older, as well as for some younger people with certain disabilities.
You are eligible for Medicare if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident who has lived in the U.S. for at least five years, and you meet one of the following criteria:
Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.
Covers services from doctors, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and preventive services.
It pays for roughly 80% of approved medical costs. You are responsible for the remaining 20% with no yearly limit on out-of-pocket costs.
An "all-in-one" alternative offered by private companies. Bundles Part A, B, and usually D. Often includes extra benefits like dental/vision. Learn more about Part C.

Missing an enrollment period can result in permanent financial penalties. Pay close attention to these timelines:
A 7-month window that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
Runs from October 15 to December 7 every year. You can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for coverage beginning January 1.
If you experience certain life events—such as moving out of your plan's service area or losing employer coverage—you may qualify for an SEP to make changes.
